no tourists here!

It's always hard to know how much sightseeing to do when visitors come. My mom enjoys relaxing on vacation, but also gets a kick out of seeing unique things, so I loaded her and Paul into Vera, and up to Culver City we went. Here's proof that it's not what you know, but who you know.

We were blessed by a congregation member with an offer for a personal tour of Sony Studios this afternoon. Her cousin basically runs the place. We had absolutely no idea how cool it would be. Ruben (Pati's cousin) welcomed us into almost all the studios, some 80 feet high to show us how movies are made. We went on the sets for Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, saw the set for a Honda car commercial, the attic where they hand paint 60 foot backdrops for scene scapes, and even saw my second celebrity. Zoe Saldana, one of the lead dancers (Eva Rodriguez) in Center Stage. She's been in many other movies, but this is the one I remember her from. She zipped by us in her golf cart too quick to get a good shot of her. Either way. That brings the celebrity tally up to 2. Well, 3 if you count Paul (He looks like a young version of Harrison Ford according to the man in the COACH store). One of the other Sony head dudes, Kevin, gave us all the inside information for the making of tons of movies, and even gave us free shirts for coming. Other people can take a tour of the studios for $40 each, and often don't even get to into one studio. We saw tons of them. For free. What an awesome gift! Thanks Pati!

Because we were so close to Beverly Hills, we swung up there to take a walk down Rodeo Drive. My mom and I can fake wealth with the best of them, so we walked into stores and looked around. We even went into DeBeers to look at all their awesome jewelry. The lady gave us a few brochure books to take with us and packed them in a bag. I got a bag on Rodeo Drive! Yeah, it only had books in it, but nobody else knew it! I felt special. Holly called as we were shopping. Very fitting considering Beverly Hills was the highlight of her trip in March. As we were finishing our walk, we saw a lady carrying a Sprinkles Cupcakes bag. I had heard about that place, so we called Kevin and got directions to it. A tiny little shop. $3.25 for one cupcake. They were delicious. The girl helping us at the register asked us where we were from. MN. She was too...St. Louis Park to be exact. She knew someone I knew! Small world.

While we were in the area, we drove Sunset Blvd through Beverly Hills, Bel Air, and into Santa Monica. We went out on the pier, then drove down to Venice Beach. Lots of shops, artists, homeless people, and performers filled the streets. I bought a beautiful blown glass ring from one of the vendors. As we walked back to our car, we passed a young girl, 18 years old, maybe, she was holding a sign that said, "I need money for drugs." She was shouting at passers-by. So sad. Vendors who had families and children helping and watching them. Earning tips to survive. It certainly made us thank God for the homes we have, and jobs we've been given.
